Work on the new helicopter (originally designated as "252") began in 1968, as the experience of using the Ka-25 showed that the Navy needed a more modern helicopter. The first flight of the prototype took place on August 8, 1973. After extensive testing and modifications, the Ka-27 was accepted into service in April 1981. Sergey V. Mikheev became the chief designer of the project after the death of Nikolai Kamov.
