Kagami Mochi is a traditional decoration used in Japan during the New Year season. It consists of two round rice cakes placed on top of each other, often with a Japanese citrus fruit called daidai on top.The name kagami means “mirror.” In ancient Japan, round mirrors were sacred objects believed to house gods. The shape of kagami mochi represents these mirrors and symbolizes the presence of Toshigami, the New Year deity who brings good fortune, health, and a rich harvest for the coming year. The two layers of rice cakes are said to represent ideas such as the past and the future, yin and yang, or harmony between people. Kagami mochi is usually displayed in homes from the end of December until January 11th. After this period, it is traditionally broken (not cut with a knife) and eaten in a ritual called Kagami Biraki, which is believed to bring good luck.Kagami mochi is not just food, but a symbol of gratitude, renewal, and hope for the new year in Japanese culture.
