You are in woodworking?Make something usefull out of the tiny rest on your spool. Using a mouse-earbrim can help If you have problems on the firtst layer. The dowel has an easy fit so you dont need a hammer to get it in. You can scale it in Z to make it more loose or tight. Here is a crossection when glued into MDF:
