This is a re-mix of the original lathe tool done by my co-worker. It has some changes to remove areas of stress in the previous design that could lead to cracking. He also realized that the rod sticking out of both ends of the tool was better off extended to allow the use of the tool both in the machine chuck, or in a well aligned tailstock. The reason for this is often times we found that we needed to level a tool while something was already in the chuck that we didn't want to remove and lose concentricity.
We replaced the ball bearings with custom bushings, but the bearing bore dimension are identical to the previous model to allow the use of a standard Skateboard bearing (608).
The tip has been changed to a blind hole, since we found the lock nut un-necessary to hold the set screw in place. We changed to a spring loaded plunger from McMaster-Carr

to prevent students "hammering" the tip of the tool by dropping it on the tool.
