In order to get a safe-ish operating speed from a salvaged electromotor, I designed a large 200 teeth timing belt pulley and a small 35 teeth pulley to get a 1:6 ratio. Alternatively, you can also run smaller gears on the motor to get a crazy 1:10 ratio. I have tried larger reductions using spur gears and I even tried to get planetary gears in the system. Due to the high speed of the electromotor and inevitable friction, these melted during operation and if they didn't, they would make a terrible noise. For the mini-lathe, and the electromotor you should stick with belt or timing belt transmissions since they are reliable and can handle some shock loads. On top of that, compared to the terrible noise of spur gears at high speeds, belt transmissions are pretty good.
The performance of the big wheel/gear is ok. It is not designed as a gt2 pulley but I have not found it slipping or losing grip. The small gear is also
