Leaf Spring Explanation What is a Leaf Spring? A Leaf Spring is a type of suspension system used mainly in: Trucks Buses Pick-up vehicles Heavy machines It is made from several curved steel plates called leaves stacked together. Main Parts 1. Main Leaf The longest top plate. It contains the two end eyes used for mounting. 2. Spring Eyes Circular ends used to connect the spring to the vehicle chassis. 3. Graduated Leaves Smaller plates placed under the main leaf to increase strength. 4. Center Bolt A bolt in the middle that holds all leaves together. 5. Clamps Metal clips that keep the leaves aligned during movement. Function of Leaf Spring The leaf spring: Supports vehicle weight Absorbs shocks from the road Reduces vibration Maintains vehicle balance How It Works When the vehicle passes over a bump: The spring bends upward. Energy from the shock is absorbed. The spring returns to its original shape. This makes driving smoother and safer. Material Usually made from: High carbon steel Spring steel Because these materials are strong and flexible. Advantages Strong and durable Simple design Can carry heavy loads Easy to manufacture Disadvantages Heavy weight Less comfort than modern suspension systems Can become noisy after long use Engineering Name Semi-Elliptic Multi-Leaf Spring
