I frequently have hundreds of Lego Technic parts to put away. I found it's easier to sort a pile of parts if I can minimize the number of possibilities.

I designed this grate to sort out the beams and liftarms from the pins and axles. It's intended to fit in the lid of a 1kg filament box.

Take your filament (or anything else, really), and cut a 170mm hole in the lid. Snap this grate in from the inside. You shouldn't need to tape it, but I did just for good measure.

To use it, fill the box about halfway with parts, close the lid, and flip the box over, and shake it over a tray. The small parts will come out, which will mostly be pins and axles.
