It's a gift from France to the United States, symbolizing freedom and democracy. Interestingly, the statue's broken chains at her feet represent the abolition of slavery. Also, did you know that Lady Liberty's official green color comes from copper oxidizing over time? When it was first built, it was a shiny copper color!
