Inspired by thing:595875, this stand uses the Lightning cable plug to support the phone at an angle suitable for use with the new iOS standby mode.
I played with cuts in the ends of the stick, to make it easier to attach to an already-plugged-in Lightning cable. But it turns out this also means it's too easy to fall off, so I prefer no cuts and a slightly-harder threading process.
I also experimented with a different angle for the inset oval on one side of the stick, to allow customization of display angle. But this didn't really work out all that well -- different cables have plugs that are slightly different sizes, and the variability sorta just got confusing more than anything else.
Regarding plug size -- these holes are relatively large, designed for the cables that I use. There are lots of Lightning cables out there that are smaller, and so end up bouncing around a bit in the holes.
