Lion and Sun

The Lion and Sun (Shir-o-Khorshid) was a historic emblem that appeared on the flag of Iran for several centuries, especially during the Safavid, Qajar, and early Pahlavi dynasties. The symbol combines a lion—often holding a sword—with a rising sun behind it. The lion traditionally represented strength, courage, and kingship, while the sun symbolized light, glory, and divine authority. Over time, the emblem became closely associated with Persian identity and monarchy.
