Making Ratios Lesson - LilBot

Students will work in a group based environment to solve a progression of design challenges relating to the manufacture of objects. Each challenge will build student knowledge of proportions in relation to scaling factor. Beginning with a preselected object, the students measure, sketch, and model the object, both on paper and using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Scaling the object is the focus throughout the challenges, with the culmination of printing the scaled object on a 3D printer so they may have a tangible product of their work. Incorporating a CAD program, which is both powerful and approachable, promotes growth in computer skills as well as the underlying skills of problem solving and self directed learning through engagement.

For this MakerEd challenge, an example object has been modeled and uploaded in its various stages. Any number of objects could be used to customize this lesson to the school site, classroom, or student.
