An insect from the family of true mantises of the order Mantisidae.
This is a large predatory insect with forelimbs adapted for grasping food.
It reaches a length of 42–52 mm (male) or 48–75 mm (female).
The largest and most common species of mantis in Europe.
The common mantis is common in the south of Europe from Portugal to Turkey and Ukraine. It is also found on many islands of the Mediterranean Sea, in Egypt and Sudan, in the Middle East from Israel to Iran, on the Arabian Peninsula. A numerous species throughout the south of Russia to the Far East.
