My take on a nanoleaf - small units that can be repeated and configured into patterns to suit. lids have tapered edges and clip snugly into the bases.
The LEDs can be soldered in a chain first, and then threaded through the bases via the holes on each edge . After the LEDs are threaded, the clips fit snugly in the groove to hold the structure together.
Rather than having several designs for the base with more or less holes in the side, I printed a piece to fill unused holes.
I cut, soldered and threaded WS8212 LEDs, one per corner. For a controller, I used an Arduino Uno and the FastLED library, but it could be executed with your choice of microcontroller.
