3D Print of The Four Horseman : War [presupported]

Hi I'm currently painting this awesome sculpt but I'm a little confused as to wether the panels on the legs and arms are supposed to be armour or part of the creatures skin, can't really tell in the renders and haven't found any other images of it painted for reference. Would appreciate if you could clarify thanks.
