This shaded line kit is for the Bosch GCM12SD second generation axial saw only. If you have the generation with the black cover, this purchase is not for you. See photos for the correct generation of saw.

This shaded line allows for greater cutting precision. It allows you to see the shadow of the blade on the board but also the teeth of the blade which tell you exactly where the blade will cut. The light casts a shadow on both sides of the blade unlike a laser which casts on one side only.
