The Moai statues are massive stone figures located on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), a remote island in the Pacific Ocean. Carved by the Rapa Nui people between the 13th and 16th centuries, these statues are believed to represent deified ancestors or important leaders. They are made from volcanic tuff, a relatively soft rock sourced from the island’s Rano Raraku quarry, where many unfinished Moai still remain. Each Moai features a distinctive elongated face, prominent nose, and heavy brow, with some adorned with pukao—large cylindrical stone "hats" made from red scoria. Most Moai were originally placed on ahu, ceremonial stone platforms, facing inland to watch over their communities. They vary in size, with the largest completed Moai, Paro, standing about 10 meters (33 feet) tall and weighing around 75 tons.
