This thing is a mounting plate for an optical Mega:Bit.

For details of what a Mega:Bit is, see http://www.pocketmoneytronics.co.uk/?page_id=398

The plate fits onto the front of a BBC micro:bit, and allows individual phototransistors to be positioned over each of the LEDs of the micro:bit LED matrix. These phototransistors can be used to control discrete LEDs, so that a larger scale micro:bit (Mega:Bit) can be controlled by the micro:bit.

The mounting plate is designed to work with these phototransistors - http://cpc.farnell.com/vishay/bpw85c/phototransistor-t1/dp/SC08561

For details of how to make a Mega:Bit, see the article on our blog site http://www.makerspace-uk.co.uk/megabit/
