From the earliest records of antiquity, whispers have persisted of those men and women whom some darker power has seen fit to afflict with the curse of the beast: wretched souls who, in the depths of their desolation and exile, sought congress with infernal forces, and were granted in return a constitution of preternatural vigour, swiftness of limb, and an acuity of mind surpassing all natural faculty. The price exacted is terrible: an appetite for human blood that neither reason nor resolution can subdue. These creatures have been known by many appellations — strigoi, lamia, nosferatu — yet here, on a continent that bleeds beneath the boots of a Corsican Emperor and his adversaries alike, they are spoken of in hushed tones as Vampires. They have penetrated every station of society, yet it is to the corridors of power that their natures most naturally tend — to the courts of Vienna, Paris, and Saint Petersburg, to the councils of generals and the drawing rooms of those who move nations
