Ferritin is composed of 24 identical protein subunits that form a hollow shell. Iron ions can enter the inside chamber of ferritin through narrow pores. There is room to pack about 4500 iron ions inside the ferritin chamber. The pathogenic mutant FTL498InsTC has much wider pores and can not trap iron inside, leading to neuroferritinopathies, due to abnormal brain iron accumulation. Models of normal and pathogenic mutant human ferritin were created from PDB IDs 2FG4 and 3kxu respectively. Models were sliced in half in PrusaSlicer and dowel connectors were created. The holes for the pins acted as slots for magnets and the pins were not printed. Printed with tree supports with the chamber facing down at 75%. Magnets were then glued in place. Small pieces of red filament were cut and placed inside the ferritin chamber. Upon vigorous shaking, the iron escapes the mutant ferritin but not the normal one. Just like in reality!!!.
