Most of the time when teachers demonstrate motors in the classroom you see them putting a coil of wire on a couple of paperclips hooking them up to a battery, and putting a magnet underneath it. While there is nothing wrong with this, and the demonstration does a good job showing how we use electricity and magnetism to generate a rotational force, it doesn't really demonstrate how motors are used in real life.
To combat this, I made a cheap, effective way to make a more practical motor that I could do as a lab/ development project with my classroom.
The main shell of the motor is made out of a pill bottle. The file is intended to fit the 3cm diameter pill bottles. I like using these because you can see inside the motor while it is working. If pill bottles are hard to come by for you, I made another model that fits a standard 2in x 1in film canister.
I was able to print 16 of the shafts on one print, which is enough for my higher level class.
