A pumpjack (or nodding donkey/horse) is the iconic surface machine used in oil drilling to lift crude oil from wells where underground pressure isn't enough, using a reciprocating "horsehead" motion to drive rods that operate a downhole pump, bringing oil to the surface in a common artificial lift system. It converts engine power into vertical strokes, pulling oil up with each upstroke and trapping it for the next, essential for many onshore wells globally. How it works Power Source: An engine (prime mover) turns a gearbox, creating rotational energy. Walking Beam: This energy powers a crank, which moves the long, pivoting walking beam up and down, mimicking a nodding motion. Sucker Rods: Attached to the walking beam is a string of rods (sucker rods) that extend deep into the well. Downhole Pump: The rods connect to a piston pump at the bottom of the well.
