When using Professor Chaddock's Quorn design, you have frequently have to align the spindle with the ways. Once you make a test cylinder (about 4" of straight shaft) that fits in the spindle taper, its not too difficult to put a dial indicator on the work head and align the cylinder with the ways. However, I wanted a FAST way to do this. This jig clamps to the back way and provides a flat, vertical surface parallel to the ways and aligned with where the spindle should be. The reference surface should be printed on the bed! Once its printed, you need to make sure the V-block surfaces are correctly aligned. To do this, align the test cylinder to the ways using a dial indicator. Then, install the jig on the back rail and check which end of the test cylinder it touches on. File the V-block face that needs adjustment until the reference face touches on both ends of the test cylinder.
Once the alignment is done, I found that I could align the spindle within 0.002" over 3" of travel
