Rajasaurus was a large predatory dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 70 million years ago, in what is now western India. Its name means “royal lizard,” derived from the Sanskrit word raja (king) and the Greek sauros (lizard), a fitting title for one of the top predators of its ecosystem. Rajasaurus belonged to the family Abelisauridae, a group of theropod dinosaurs known for their short, deep skulls, muscular necks, and reduced forelimbs. These dinosaurs were common across the ancient southern continents that once formed the supercontinent Gondwana. The most distinctive feature of Rajasaurus was the prominent single horn or raised ridge located on the top of its skull, above the eyes and nasal area. This structure may have been used for display, species recognition, or even head-butting behavior, although its exact function remains uncertain.
