Fluidized Bed Reactor, or simply a fluidized bed for use in media contact in reef aquarium system. I will be using it for contacting with Iron Oxide Hydroxide for phosphate removal but it could be used to contact with any other type of media for nitrate removal, activated charcoal or any other of the number of materials one can use in a reef aquarium.
The fluidized bed system consists of a top and bottom with an acrylic tube between them. The salt water is pumped in the bottom and overflows out the top. Media is observed in the acrylic tube section to make sure it it tumbling properly.
Bottom and top are connected to the acrylic tube with o-ring seals.
Word of caution. Be careful with how much Iron Oxide Hydroxide you use in this device, or any fluidized bed reactor for that matter, and how long you run it as stripping ALL of the phosphate out of your reef aquarium quickly as I did can shock and thus kill corals. I learned this the hard way.
