Update 11/2021:

Added a stronger drive gear, since the normal one failed. For this one you have to get the orientation right. In any case I recommend printing in ABS and checking the screw regularly to prevent coming loose.

Hint: You need the parts form the original thing (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4076827). This repository only contains the parts needed to mount a stepper motor.

Reitec Polisher silent Nema 17 stepper mod

Due to the low torque at low rpm, a DC-Motor needs a gearbox for this appliance. This results in the annoying high pitch screeching of cheap gearboxes. Stepper motors on the other hand can have high torque at low rpm due to their greater diameter, multi piece armature and electronic control, making a gearbox obsolete. With no brushes and no gearbox the lifespan of a stepper should be longer as well. Using modern TMC2208 drivers, operation can be very silent.
