I used the JOINvirus.step file by GrabCad user FredSWUG to create 3D individual component models that can be printed on a single extruder machine with limited support. Link below to the original work. The three pieces of the virus were printed at 50% scale making the spherical core 3" diameter. The base was modeled to fit such that it was printed at 100% scale. The virus component model edits were done in Solidworks 2019. The base was modeled from scratch in FreeCAD 0.18.
It was sliced with Cura 4.5. From memory I think the core was printed with 6 wall lines (a bit of an accident, normally I set it to 3), 10% cubic infill, and gradual infill steps set to 2. The spikes were printed with 3 wall lines, 25% cubic infill, and 2 steps. The base was printed with 3 wall lines and zero infill.
The core had about a 1-1/2" diameter support underneath. The internal bosses and holes in the core printed very well despite the 10% infill setting. I think this was due in part to accidentally set
