Saruman, also known as White Saruman and later as Coloured Saruman, is a fictional character in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. He is the leader of the Istari wizards, sent by the divine Valar in human form to Middle-earth to challenge the novel's main antagonist, Sauron.
