This self supporting geodesic dome is a 3d puzzle that is easy to build and fun to knock down. I was originally investigating a design to build a barrel vault, which is basically several Roman arches next to one another that forms a semi-cylindrical tunnel. I came across geodesic domes and decided to try to combine the principals of an arch with a geodesic dome and this is what I came up with.
The ring acts as a kind of buttress, that counteracts the inherent outward force generated an arch.
