This fuel gage is similar to a gages used in present automotive design. The fuel gage is usually incorporated into the fuel pump assembly. I have separated the float arm and sending assembly to show a simple design. There are a no fasteners used in this assembly other then the one use to hole the cover to the tank. They are not shown in this design. This could be used in a stationary unit with gravity feed. But automotive manufacturers would only want one hole cut in the top surface of the take. You will never see holes cut in the bottom of the tank. The sending unit uses sires of resistors so that as the float arm rotates the circuit will pass though the different resistor changing the resistance the gas gage reads. The gas gage in your car is just an ohm meter that is calibrated to read empty to full. The assembly senseleval_a3 can be added to a congenital fuel pump and be used in automotive.
