For this project, I wanted to create a conjoined mask which engaged the facial senses, sight, breath, and smell, whilst also placing the two wearers within a close proximity. While initially the pieces were supposed to be worn all at once, I miscalculated the size, therefore the pieces must be worn alone. The pieces include an eye piece, which connects the two wearers sight, forcing them to stare into each others eyes, this piece of the mask was inspired by Lygia Clark’s Dialogue: Goggles. Surprisingly, the eye piece was the mask people were most comfortable wearing. I feel that currently eye contact is becoming increasingly less common and making people more uncomfortable—but then again, eye contact is something many humans are used to maintaining. Where as sharing breath, is much less common. While the mask of course is voluntary in nature, the two performers are choosing to wear it, the masks force interaction of senses which are not typically engaged.
