The sampler has 2 main components: 1. The scoop, equipped with a heavy duty servo and a small linear actuator. The servo motor is screwed onto the side panel of the rover, allowing easy insulation and wiring. The actuator is insulated by a casing of polyurethane foam, and can be equipped with a heating mechanism. This assembly weighs 85.38 grams. 2. The Sorter is the main part of the assembly. The scoop lifts regolith onto the intake platform, which sorts the +2 cm rocks out. The regolith is sorted with a sliding motion, generated by a servo piston. The concept doesn't use vibration, and thus won't damage electronics. After the regolith enters the main sifter platform, the less than 1 cm diameter rocks will fall through, and travel down the funnel into the lower layer of the sampling container. The greater than 1 cm rocks will stay above the main sifter platform, and travel down the upper funnel into the top level of the sampling container. This assembly weighs a total of 358.21 grams. Other details: -Total weight of sampler is 443.59 grams, including everything shown in design. This doesn't include the bolts needed to secure the roller carriages. -Total wattage used should total at ~20 to 25 watts: the motors shouldn't need to run very long before the container is filled. -The camera should be able to see the entire process. It depends on where the camera is located. -The pmma "windows" shown will be coated on the inside with Teflon, the funnel with a thicker coat than the "windows", because of scratching generated by the sliding regolith. -When the container is full, the scoop would simply stop operating. - Total of 3 renderings. -Materials used are aluminum, titanium 6AI-4V, and pmma plastic.
