A socket and spigot joint is also known as cotter joints. It is a method of joining two coaxial rods temporarily. One rod is fitted in a spigot and on the other end of one rod which spigot is fixed inside a socket. Spigot and socket slots align in such a way that a cotter can be inserted for locking two rods. This joint is resist the rotating shaft means it is used for only axial rods, it will not allow the rotation of one rod related to another. So it will not able to balance and act as a loose joint under any vibration and centrifugal forces. The cotter joint is used in steam engines and pumps to firm a rigid joint and that’s why it is the most favored joint. Also, it is easy to design and produce and makes rigid joints.
