I tutor physics and am always looking to print more demonstrations to inspire students. After my success making a DC motor model I thought an obvious follow-on would be to make a functioning speaker. Effectively an acoustic speaker is a linear motor and could be made with a similar coil and permanent magnets. Commercial hobby speakers are inexpensive, but you cannot easily see the magnet-coil gap and they are not reconfigurable for experimentation. Critically the coil former needed to be light and the suspension very free. On my 7th iteration I finally had a flexure suspension system I was happy with, especially designed to print in PLA. For students there are many possible lessons with options to change the number of magnets, modify the suspension stiffness and wind their own custom coils… not to mention designing their own custom enclosure! To make this model you will need: 0.4mm diameter enamelled copper wire (~3m) 3-15 neodymium magnets 6mm diameter by 6mm long Some tape to secure
