This is my fourth attempt at a spool holder. Finally one I am happy with. It stands separately from the printer. The holder diameter accepts all of my spools, and I set the height to the average print height on my Ender 3. The "SpoolHolder4.scad" file is included to permit changes.
Placing the holder some distance from the printer avoids the retracting filament from trying to back spin the spool. The height is set by the length of the support rod.
The Support rod is a pointed steel, or aluminum, 1/4" rod about 20cm long. It supports the top, Holder, and the Arm. The arm takes a M4-20 cap screw. The taper on the point should be sharper than 45 degrees with a 2mm flat instead of a point.
