I saw something like this on a video, and decided I'd design and build one of my own. as it seemed to be a good exercise as I continue to learn how to use solidworks, which I'm still fairly new at. I saw some others, but didn't like the fact they have a ring at the base, which makes it rather "in your face". I wanted something that had a regular triangle at the base, and from the side, continued the 60 degree theme upwards.
It's interesting to think about why this "works", which I thought "OK so I understand it now, the string in the middle in tension holds the weight of the upper model, with the 3 side strings acting like guide ropes for a circus big top tent pole : if it sways either way, one of the other 3 strings pulls it back to the middle." I realised this is a little simplistic, because of course it is actually completely stable if you turn it over : in fact it doesn't matter what direction gravity is acting in... it's still stable.
