Tessella — A Voronoi-Inspired Parametric Lamp

Tessella is a table lamp shade generated through parametric design, blending organic form with computational geometry. The design uses a Voronoi tessellation pattern wrapped around a twisted, vase-like surface, creating an irregular cell structure that lets light spill through in soft, scattered fragments rather than a single uniform beam.

The project was born from a simple everyday problem: needing a light source at a night-time desk that wouldn't disturb someone sleeping nearby. Instead of a harsh, direct lamp, Tessella diffuses light through its perforated shell, casting a scattered pattern across the ceiling and walls, creating a calm, ambient glow rather than a functional work light.

Design process: the base form was modeled as a twisted revolved surface in Rhino/Grasshopper, unrolled into a flat panel, mapped with a Voronoi pattern, and re-wrapped onto the 3D surface — a fully parametric workflow that allowed fine control ove
