The design chosen was inspired by the need to minimize the costs of efficient production while still meeting the requirements of a proper ventilator. The cam and arm were designed to conveniently work with a motor so that the set up would best facilitate both continuous mandatory ventilation (CMV) and Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV); A tapered oval or egg shape rotating cam controls a mechanical arm that squeezes the self-inflating bag. There will be two degrees of freedom for the cam, the rotating motion and the motion of the sliding along the axle. There will be different sensors controlling how fast and how far the cam turns and slides respectively according to the feedback of the patient's monitors. The speed of the rotation regulates the pressure of the flow, the size of the radius regulates the continuity and volume of the flow. The cam can be easily manufactured from a small 3d printer or large-scale production. Depends on the material, it can last for at least 2X106 cycles if 3d printing filament PLA is used, not to mention a much longer life if the cam were to be produced with harder materials. A humidifier was set into the circuit to provide properly conditioned air. A gas inflow opening was provided in case of specific patient needs, and just before it in the circuit, a peep valve was installed to deliver necessary pressures. The circuit also includes HEPA filters both on the inspiratory and expiratory pathways to protect the patient as well as medical personnel. Lastly, a control box would be integrated to regulate vital conditions such as the fraction of inspired oxygen, positive end-expiratory pressure, tidal volume, and inspiratory and expiratory time ratios.
