Torosaurus was a large, herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period, around 68 to 66 million years ago, in what is now North America. It belonged to the ceratopsid family, closely related to the more famous Triceratops, and was part of the subfamily Chasmosaurinae, known for species with long frills and large brow horns. The name Torosaurus, meaning “perforated lizard,” refers to the distinctive large openings, or fenestrae, in its frill, which set it apart from other ceratopsids whose frills were typically solid bone. Torosaurus was among the largest horned dinosaurs, measuring up to nine meters in length and weighing between six and eight tonnes. Its most striking features were its enormous skull and elongated frill, which could reach over two and a half meters long, making it one of the largest skulls of any land animal ever discovered.
