The Trieste Bathyscaphe (a self-propelled vehicle used for deep-sea dives) is a Swiss-designed and Italian built deep diving research vessel bought by the US navy in 1958 and became the first crewed vessel to reach the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on Earth. The Trieste retired in 1966 an is now on display at the National Museum of the United States Navy in Washington, D.C.
