You can just cover up the armies you don't want with your fingers and dump out the pieces you need. You can also pull the whole insert out with a little finesse if you prefer to have an easier to pick from tray. The second insert is just a big box you can dump all the pieces into, its faster to use but you have to sort through all the pieces every time you want to play.
