The sextant: a celestial navigation toolA sextant is a navigational instrument used to measure the angular distance between two objects, most commonly a celestial body (like the Sun or a star) and the horizon. This measurement, called a "sight," allows navigators to determine their latitude and longitude, thus pinpointing their position on Earth.How it worksThe sextant employs two mirrors: an index mirror and a horizon mirror. The observer looks through a telescope at the horizon, while simultaneously adjusting the index mirror to reflect the celestial body into the same view, aligning the celestial body's image with the horizon. The angle at which the mirrors are positioned determines the angular distance, which is then read from a graduated arc on the instrument.Sextant in spaceSextants have played a role in space exploration, according to NASA. During the Gemini and Apollo missions, astronauts used sextants for navigation, especially as a backup in case of communication loss or equipment failure. Unlike Earth-based navigation, where the horizon serves as a reference point, astronauts used star pairs or celestial body limbs (the edge of a planet or moon) to measure angles and calculate their position.For instance, on Apollo 13, when the primary navigation system failed, Jim Lovell used a sextant to measure the Earth's terminator line (the line separating day and night) and determine the spacecraft's position, which allowed for a safe return to Earth.Modern spacecraft primarily use more advanced systems for navigation, including GPS (for Earth orbit), inertial measurement units (IMUs), star trackers, and sun sensors. However, the sextant may still be a valuable backup or emergency navigation tool for future missions, especially to the Moon and beyond, where GPS signals may be unavailable or unreliable. Researchers on the International Space Station (ISS) have tested a hand-held sextant, showing its suitability for future manned space missions like Artemis.
