A universal joint, also known as a U-joint, is a mechanical component that connects two rotating shafts which are not aligned in a straight line, allowing the transmission of rotational power or torque between them at varying angles. It consists of two yokes connected by a cross-shaped member, enabling flexibility in the angle between the shafts while maintaining rotational motion. Universal joints are commonly used in automotive drivetrains to transfer power from the engine to the wheels when the shafts are at an angle, as well as in various machinery where shafts need to transmit torque despite misalignment. Although it allows for angular movement, the rotational speed of the driven shaft can vary slightly depending on the angle, so it is typically used within moderate angular ranges to ensure smooth operation.
