The USS Edson (DD-946) stands as a powerful symbol of mid-twentieth-century American naval strength, bridging the gap between World War II-era ship design and the emerging missile age of the Cold War. Commissioned on November 7, 1958, Edson was part of the Forrest Sherman-class destroyers, the last generation of U.S. Navy destroyers built primarily around naval guns rather than guided missiles. Named after Marine Corps General Merritt A. Edson, a Medal of Honor recipient, the ship embodied both tradition and evolving military strategy during a time of global tension. After being decommissioned the destroyer was later relocated to Bay City, Michigan, where it became the centerpiece of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum. Today, the ship is preserved as a National Historic Landmark, recognized for its historical significance and its role in representing Cold War naval operations.
