The Ulfberht cross, often called the “Wolf Cross” (Vargkors), is a silver amulet from 10th–11th century Iceland. Discovered at Foss, its design intriguingly blends pagan and Christian symbolism. The pendant’s shape can be interpreted as either Thor’s Hammer, representing Norse paganism, or a Christian cross. Additionally, the design incorporates a wolf’s head, possibly symbolizing Fenrir from Norse mythology. This duality reflects the transitional period in Iceland when Christianity was supplanting pagan beliefs. The artifact exemplifies how Norse societies navigated religious shifts, merging traditional symbols with new Christian iconography.
