Two companies of Massachusetts sharpshooters, a rarity in the American Civil War, fought as independent units attached to other commands. The 2nd Company of (Governor) Andrews saharpshooters was attached to the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry during the Gettysburg Campaign.
Their distinctive monument is on Sickles Avenue in an area known as "The Loop," on the south end of the battlefield adjacent to the Wheatfield.
