The monument to the 74th Pennsylvania Infantry is a rarity in Civil War statuary, depicting not a fighting soldier or a marching soldier, but one in the throes of death. In a pose based on the popular "Dying Gaul," a widely reproduced Roman statue popular in the late 18th to mid-19th century, the color sergeant slumps to the ground mortally wounded.
