I wanted several lamps to put around the house, so I came up with this basic design. It's a glorified enclosure for this $3 Leviton bulb socket:

You'll see plastic ones in the store for a bit cheaper - spend the extra $0.50 for the ceramic. The weight gives the lamp some heft. For the cord, you can either scrounge one from your junk box (you have a junk box, right?) or get one of these light duty (no pun intended) $2 extension cords and lop the end off:

Wire the narrow side of the polarized plug to the gold terminal and the wide side to the silver. That makes the bottom of the socket the spicy part, and while the walls of the socket at line neutral. For a switch, either use a switched outlet or one of these $3 in-line lamp switches:

There are 4mm holes in the base that you can tap for #10 machine screws to hold the socket to the base - wood screws will probably work f
