The elbow engine, characterized by its distinctive bent crankshaft, was a type of reciprocating steam engine widely used during the 19th century. Its compact and vertically oriented design made it ideal for applications with limited space, such as on ships and in early industrial settings. By harnessing the power of steam to drive a piston back and forth in a cylinder, the elbow engine converted reciprocating motion into rotary motion, powering various machinery, steamboats, and pumps. Though largely replaced by more efficient designs, the elbow engine played a significant role in the advancement of steam power during the Industrial Revolution.
