PROJECT OVERVIEW This project presents a wearable MCP (Metacarpophalangeal) driver prototype developed to support individuals with amputations at the proximal phalanx level of the index, middle, and ring fingers. The design explores a mechanically driven approach to restoring functional grasp by translating residual finger motion into controlled movement of an external prosthetic linkage. DESIGN OBJECTIVE The primary goal of the prototype is to retain and utilize the user’s existing biomechanical capability. Instead of replacing motion with powered actuation, the system captures flexion and extension generated by the residual digit and transfers it to a mechanical driver that reproduces coordinated bending behavior equivalent to PIP and DIP joint motion. FUNCTIONAL CONCEPT The device is mounted to the residual finger using a ring-based interface that provides stable attachment while remaining wearable for daily activities. This interface is intentionally designed with compliant connection features to align the residual anatomy with the tendon-driving structure, allowing efficient force transmission without rigidly constraining the finger. A mechanical linkage system converts proximal input motion into distal articulation, enabling naturalistic closing and opening behavior during grasping tasks. ERGONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS Special attention is given to comfort, adaptability, and preservation of remaining hand function: – The ring connection accommodates anatomical variation and distributes load to minimize localized pressure. – A compliant alignment structure helps prevent misalignment between the user’s motion path and the mechanical driver. – An abductor washer component is incorporated to avoid restricting lateral movement, ensuring that the residual finger maintains its natural versatility. ENGINEERING SCOPE This model represents a concept-level mechanical prototype intended for kinematic evaluation, ergonomic assessment, and iterative development. The design is sui
