Rather than using multiple robots capable of movement to build a structure, employ a series of smaller robots that can be carried and used as tools by the same robotic arms that place the voxels. The goal is to reduce the weight and complexity of the robotic system by eliminating the heavy and complex mechanisms needed for movement. It is likely that the strength of the robotic arms deploying the voxels will need to be increased to carry and position these robotic tools. However, the weight saved by eliminating the need for independent movement in multiple robots should offset any additional weight added to the arms. In this example, the robot installs a clip for wiring or small lines into the supplied unmodified voxel. It features a removable clip magazine, allowing it to be carried back to a depot for reloading or complete replacement as needed. The magazine can hold up to 18 clips. Batteries and larger motors can be positioned on top to improve the robot's balance while being carried by the arms. Other examples of robotic tools that can be carried include: A tool that guides wires or pipes through voxels. A tool that can screw fittings together inside a voxel. A tool that can place 90-degree pipe elbows inside a voxel. A tool that can be placed on the side of a structure and left temporarily to hold something in place, such as a solar panel or shielding.
